JOB DESCRIPTION: Café Kitchen Manager 

Job Summary: The Recovery Café is a community in which men and women traumatized by homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges can come to know themselves as loved and as instruments of love in the lives of others. The Café Kitchen Manager has a deep understanding of the Café’s vision and works to nurture and maintain our principles to show respect, give and forgive, live respectfully, practice compassion, and encourage growth. 

The Café Kitchen Manager is responsible for assisting with supervision of Café operations, specializing in the production of meals as well as supporting Members, community volunteers and staff during the hours when he/she is on duty. 

Days and hours of operation: The Café hours of operation are Tuesdays through Saturday 12 - 4 pm. The schedule of work will vary according to staffing needs. This person will work 20 hours per week on a regular basis. Shifts will be flexible to accommodate lunch preparation. Lunch is ready at 12:30. 

Job Responsibilities: 

➢ To embrace and promote the Café environment of radical hospitality in the context of loving accountability 

➢ Ensure daily preparation and set-up of the Café, kitchen and meals. 

➢ Supervise kitchen operations to include staff, volunteers and members in food preparation, inventory and quality control 

➢ Ensure the Café remains clean and beautiful: participating in general up keep and maintenance scheduling. 

➢ Communicating and enforcing Café guidelines and boundaries with loving accountability. 

➢ Attend Café staff trainings as assigned. 

➢ Attend Café staff meetings as assigned. 

➢ Facilitate Recovery circles as assigned and if interested. 

➢ Assist with Recovery Café program development. 

➢ Assist with training of other staff, community volunteers and Members. 

➢ Assist Members access community resources. 

➢ Be responsible for safely transporting Café food and supplies. 



➢ Advocate for Members. 

➢ Ensure the safe handling of all aspects of Café food preparation, consumption and storage. 

➢ Assist with supervision of community volunteers and Members. 


Required for this position: 

➢ Must have strong interpersonal communications skills 

➢ 2-5 years restaurant experience with management and operation skills 

➢ Experience in training and delegating kitchen duties 

➢ Able to maintain inventory and maintain budget 

➢ Able to take direction and work with a team 

➢ Ability to consistently serve as a motivator, conflict resolver, and “de-escalator” for both staff and members. 

➢ Other duties as assigned. 

➢ Ability to work amicably on a diverse staff team with flexibility, creativity and enthusiasm. 

➢ Proficiency in basic computer skills sufficient to communicate effectively with staff and other agencies using Microsoft Word, optimally Excel and email. 

➢ Strong organizational skills. 

➢ Personal understanding of the recovery journey (not necessarily in recovery from chemical addiction) 

➢ Ability to embody principles of recovery in daily interactions. 

➢ Strong desire to support men and women who are on the recovery journey 

➢ If the candidate is in recovery from alcohol and/or other substances, he/she must have at least two years drug and alcohol free. 

➢ Capacity to love and to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries with Café patrons who at times may be very challenging. 

➢ Valid driver’s license (safe driving record required). 

➢ Washington State Food Handlers Permit 

➢ Ability to lift 50 pounds. 

➢ Non-slip shoes 


Minimum Education, Work and Skill Requirements: 

➢ Education: Minimum of High School degree (or equivalent); years of experience in human service may be substituted. 

➢ Work Experience: 2-5 years progressively responsible work experience in a position utilizing skills relevant to this position. 


Additional Desirable Qualifications: 

➢ Previous experience in a social service agency and with populations struggling with addiction and/or mental health concerns. 

➢ Kitchen experience with managerial qualities. 

➢ Recovery training or education in human services a plus (e.g. Chemical Dependence). 

➢ Experience in menu and recipe development.
